Resonate is a 501(c)3 nonprofit founded by and for student musicians. In 2018 high school clarinetist and pianist Joanna Lin, a Fargo native, created the organization's Musical Masterclasses with the goal of spreading her love for music with more young people across the state. Each musical masterclass features a collegiate chamber ensemble who travel to a school and perform a concert.
What elevates these performances and makes them truly special, however, is the open discussion afterwards. The performers uniquely focus on explaining their interpretation of the piece and how they made their musical decisions--even selecting various sections in the music and playing it alternative ways. When furthered with the performers sharing their own experiences and advice on music-making, the performance gives students rare insight and exposure to high-level musicians & their thought process. Ultimately, the masterclasses are performed with the goal of fulfilling Resonate's mission statement: "to inspire future generations of musicians by providing rural areas with quality music education, performances, and instruments".
Do you know someone in our state who is doing something interesting and innovative in the classroom? Are you interested in research? Our newly-updated NDMEJis a great place to introduce research, innovative music technology, best teaching practices, and all things music education. Consider submitting an article yourself, or contacting a fellow teacher and asking them to submit an essay. We'd love to hear from you!
